GREEN STEEL - Important facts about Green Steel
Steel is one of the fundamental engineering and construction materials in the world. Steel is known for its strength and versatility. Steel is commonly used in the construction industry, agriculture industry, automobile industry, and many more. Along with this, Steel is also the biggest emitter of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) comprising around 8% of total gas emissions. Therefore, to save our environment there is a need for something which reduces the impact of steel on the environment. Hence, Green Steel is introduced. In this article, we will discuss all the important facts about Green Steel.
What is Green Steel?
Green Steel is defined as steel that is manufactured in environment-friendly and sustainable ways so that its impact on the environment gets reduced. This process involves the use of renewable energy resources, reduction of carbon emissions, reduction of waste, etc. This can be achieved by introducing Green Hydrogen.
What is Green Hydrogen -
Green Hydrogen is also known as renewable hydrogen. It can be obtained by electrolysis of water. This process is entirely powered by renewable energy sources such as wind energy, and solar energy. In this process, electrolytes split water into hydrogen and oxygen, emitting zero carbon dioxide to the environment. This is considered as most cleanest and sustainable hydrogen.
Methods of Green Steel Production
Use of Renewable energy -
Steel manufacturers require energy at almost each and every step of manufacturing and furnaces. For the manufacturing of Green Steel, renewable energy sources such as wind energy, and solar energy should be used instead of fossil fuel such as coal.
Use of Green Hydrogen -
Green Steel is manufactured by replacing natural gas with Green Hydrogen. By doing this, carbon dioxide emissions stopped and hence it became environment-friendly steel.
Use of Decarbonization Technologies -
Green Steel requires technologies that are environment-friendly. It includes electric furnaces, downstream treatment of steel, reuse or recycling of scrap steel, etc.
Carbon Storage -
This is the process of storing carbon instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. If carbon is emitted in any process then it will be captured, stored, and utilized for another purpose. This will help in making Green Steel.
Waste Reduction -
Green Steel production aims to minimize waste during the whole manufacturing process. It includes recycling of by-products, utilization of scrap steel, etc.
Importance of Green Steel
Sustainability -
Green Steel manufacturing reduces not only carbon emissions but also the use of non-renewable energy sources such as coal. Hence, imparting a positive sustainable impact on the environment.
Environment Friendly -
The Steel Industry is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases and toxic chemicals. Therefore, causes air and water pollution. Green Steel manufacturing releases zero or negligible toxic gases and chemicals and hence becomes an environment-friendly choice.
Increasing Demand -
People are looking for environment-friendly products nowadays. With the help of Green Steel, steel manufacturers are able to achieve their demands.
Challenges in the Path of Green Steel
Low-grade iron ore -
The biggest problem faced by Indian Steel manufacturers is the use of low-grade iron ore. This low-grade iron ore makes them incompatible with the Green Steel production. Low-grade iron ore only manufactures steel in blast furnaces. For Green Steel production, manufacturers have to shift to High-grade iron ore which is very difficult due to less availability in India.
Use of Electric Arc Furnace -
Due to some technical reasons, EAFs are very important to use if you want to manufacture Green Steel. However, these EAFs need high-grade iron ores only in which iron content is more than 60%. Along with this, they are very expensive and difficult to install.
Direct injection of Hydrogen as a replacement of Coal in Blast Furnace -
Blast Furnace is operated at very high temperatures i.e. 1000 to 1200 degrees Celsius. Combustion of hydrogen releases very less amount of heat. This means to use hydrogen as a replacement for Coal, it must be preheated and preheating means more energy combustion. To make Green Steel, energy should be from renewable energy resources.
In Conclusion, Green Steel is the future of the Steel Industry. The ultimate aim of Green Steel is the elimination of all harmful chemicals, gases, processes, and all other factors that have a negative impact on the environment. All steel manufacturers should start practicing eco-friendly ways to manufacture steel.
